Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS APO HSM Zoom IS Lens

  • Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors
  • Offers Sigma’s OS System (Optical Stabilization) allowing handheld photography even in low-light situation
  • HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet & high-speed auto focus
  • FLD glass elements with performance equal to fluorite glass for compensate for color aberration
This latest version of the Sigma APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is pleased to announce the inclusion of Optical Stablization(OS) which is critical to equipment sporting this focal range allowing for hand-held tele-photography and the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. One SLD and two FLD glass elements provides maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, and the lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming system to ensure sharp images throughout the entire zoom range. Improved optical performance provides excellent correction of sagittal coma flare and ensures ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens. The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor ensures quiet and high speed AF, while allowing full-time manual focus override. A truly unique product which is a rarity in the photo industry, this lens is the only lens of its kind on the market; a professional zoom lens that also features a fast aperture. Most professionals own the standard 300mm 2.8, but they also have to carry a shorter zoom lens for those times when the subjects move closer. That means fumbling around switching lenses or carrying a second camera body. The amazing Sigma zoom lens let you instantly determine the picture composition you want without having to change your vantage point. Imagine photographing courtside at a college basketball game and having the versatility to zoom in on a player's face or hand and then instantly zoom back to capture the entire player making his shot. You can do it with the Sigma APO 120-300mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM. The aperture remains constant at F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. The addition of the optional APO tele converter produces an ultra telephoto zoom lens with AF.

This large aperture telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabiliser system and offers ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens. One SLD and two FLD glass elements are used for maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. This lens adopts an inner focusing and inner zooming system to ensure sharp images throughout the entire zoom range. The OS system offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible, enabling hand held tele-photography. Sigma’s APO Teleconverters can be used with this lens.

Features

Ultra-high resolution

One SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and two FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements are used for maximum correction of chromatic aberrations. Improved optical performance provides excellent correction of sagittal coma flare and ensures ultra-high resolution, comparable to a fixed focal length lens.

Super Multi-Layer Coating

Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.

Sigma’s proprietary OS system

Sigma’s proprietary OS (Optical Stabiliser) system offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible, enabling hand held tele-photography. The Optical Stabiliser in this lens has two modes, Mode 1 is ideal for general photography and Mode 2 is designed for panning subjects such as racing cars.

Inner focusing and zooming system

The lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming system. The overall length of the lens does not change during focusing and zooming, ensuring convenient handling. The inner focusing system also eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using circular polarising filters. A removable tripod collar (TS-31) is included as a standard component.

Quiet and high speed autofocus

Incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed autofocus, while allowing full-time manual focus override.

Rounded diaphragm

This lens has a rounded 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image.

APO Teleconverter

The addition of Sigma’s 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Teleconverters produce a 168-420mm F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or a 240-600mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens respectively.

High-quality telephoto lenses for DSLRs are tricky to buy. They're a huge investment, with prices starting at around £1,500 and heading sharply skywards. There are also considerable usability problems: long focal lengths require fast shutter speeds, which require large apertures, which all results... Read more ...

Great sports lens
I am upgrading from Nikon DX to full frame and wanted a lens which would give me similar coverage to my excellent 70-200 f2.8 VRII with a full-frame camera. This Sigma fits the bill but I was a bit concerned spending so much on a lens which may not be as good as my Nikon zoom. Read more ...

I purchase this lens in july 2011. It's an amazing zoom near equivalent to the Nikon 300mm 2.8 vr. It is a very performant lens and more versatile than a fix for a price very competitive. No regret at all. Read more ...

Excellent Lens - And Review Link
The long and the short of it is is that it is a remarkable piece of glass given the price point - very sharp at the center and very contrasty. I wrote an in depth review at the Nature, Wildlife and Pet Photography Forum (nwpphotoforum dot com). Read more ...
