Overview & Features top

Unleash the photographer within

The perfect combination of speed and quality, the EOS 50Ds 15.1 MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processor deliver superb high-ISO performance, shooting flexibility and image quality without compromise.

Features

  • 15.1 MP (APS-C) CMOS sensor
  • 6.3 fps with up to 90 JPEG image burst
  • DIGIC 4 processor
  • ISO range up to 12800
  • 3.0 VGA LCD with Live View
  • High precision wide area AF
  • Magnesium alloy body
  • EOS Integrated Cleaning System
  • EF/EF-S lens and EX Speedlite compatibility

15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor

Canons APS-C sized CMOS sensor delivers ultra-detailed, low-noise images ideal for large-scale reproduction and creative cropping. Redesigned pixels with gapless micro lenses extend light gathering capability for exceptional performance throughout the ISO range.

6.3 fps continuous shooting

Perfect for sports, wildlife and action sequences, the EOS 50D captures 6.3 frames per second for continuous bursts of up to 90 JPEGs with a UDMA card.

DIGIC 4

DIGIC 4 is the EOS 50Ds powerful processing engine, working with the CMOS sensor to deliver 14-bit image processing for smooth gradations and natural looking colours. Fast enough to power 6.3 fps continuous shooting, DIGIC 4 is also responsible for the EOS 50Ds near-instant startup time and quick image review following shooting.

ISO range

For fast shutter speed shooting in low light, the EOS 50D features base ISO speeds to 3200, expandable to an ultra-sensitive 12800.

Clear View LCD

The 3.0 920,000 dot VGA LCD screen offers exceptional clarity, perfect for checking the focus and composition of your images. The large viewing angle coupled with Live View mode makes photography at awkward angles a breeze.

Live View mode

Live View mode allows users to accurately frame images when using the viewfinder is impractical. The dedicated Live View button displays real-time images on the LCD, offering three types of auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF, which focuses based on faces detected in the frame.

Wide-area AF with 9 cross type points

The high-precision AF system employs 9 cross type points for precise focusing on both horizontal and vertical planes. The central AF point offers sensitivity up to f/2.8. Points are spread out across the AF frame to better accommodate off-centre subjects.

Magnesium alloy body

Built for demanding daily use, the EOS 50Ds lightweight, durable magnesium alloy body incorporates environmental protection for performance you can rely on.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

Canons EICS combines special component materials to reduce dust generation, a fluorine coating on the low-pass filter to repel dust, and a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit to shake dust free at power up/power down.

Accessories

The EOS 50D is compatible with over 60 EF and EF-S lenses and all EX Series Speedlite flash units.

EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM

Equivalent to a 28-135mm lens, this new EF-S lens brings true wide-angle to tele coverage to EOS 20D and Digital Rebel shooters. It has Canon's Image Stabilization system, allowing safe hand-holding at speeds up to three stops slower than otherwise possible. And of course, it's optically optimized for digital SLRs. A ring-type USM means both fast and silent AF, as well as full-time manual focus when in the AF mode.

[REVIEW—CANON 50D DSLR and 18-200mm lens]
This is a 15 megapixel single lens reflex, supplied with an 18–200mm lens with effective optical stabilisation. This is the evolutionary replacement for the 40D, with more pixels and a high resolution 75mm LCD to bring it into line with Nikon and Sony competitors. Read more ...
PROSImage quality is exceptionally fine, as we expect from this line of cameras. Skin tones are natural and colours are accurate. The long zoom lens works better than expected, focussing smartly at all focal lengths but with some distortion at the extremes.
CONSA three exposure auto-bracket for a camera in this price range is inadequate

Canon EOS 50D
Almost exactly a year after Canon's genre-busting 40D was unleashed onto the world, the 50D has entered the fray. It's a step up — not a replacement — to the much admired work-horse. But the 50D is certainly no show pony given that, at least from the outside, it looks almost identical to the 40D. Read more ...
PROSExcellent picture quality, 15.1 megapixels, Gorgeous new LCD screen, HDMI output
CONSNo Live View in Automatic modes, Creative Auto mode seems out of place

They lost me with this one
Not a bad camera but Pentax cameras were a revelation to me in their use. I was disappointed with the ergonomics and the lack of some features. Picture quality was also a letdown for the price paid. Nikon had the D90 and that's what I was looking at. Read more ...

Canon EOS 50D 15.1MP Digital SLR Camera
This camera is very heavy with the f2.8 zoom 70-200mm L lens.I should not miss an action shot because the camera shoots 6 frames/sec. I had to buy a battery case & handle to have the capacity I needed to shoot many photos. I also bought a fast card with 8 GB capacity. Read more ...
PROSExtremely Fast with USDMA Card. Some photos are very sharp.Very fast camera with USDMA card.
CONSToo Heavy ! Some photos are blurry when taken from a distance. CR2 files need additional software to handle.
