Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Canon's mid-range 'nifty-fifty'. Standard lenses such as this are popular due to their lightweight and bright maximum aperture. Read more ...
PROSDecent resolution across the frame when stopped down, Good resistance to flare, Low vignetting at maximum aperture
CONSBarrel distortion may be noticeable in critical applications, Quality towards the edges doesn't really excite until stopped down to f/4

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Disgruntled customer
Bought the lens nearly 4 years ago, I hadn't used it as often as I thought I would. After a couple of years I had the dreaded Canon message E100 clean contacts!! At first just fixing the lens again sorted out the problem. Then a couple of attempts may have been required. Read more ...

A Prime Example
Overview ------------- The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 sits in between the cheap-o f/1.8 mkII version and the ridiculously expensive f/1 .2 L-series version. There was a crazy f/1.0L lens at one time but this seems to have been discontinued (presumably as nobody could afford it). Read more ...
