Canon 100-400mm L IS USM
This is Canon’s longest zoom lens and is categorised as one of their L range. The lens has been around for some time now, earning itself a somewhat mixed reputation amongst digital photographers that didn’t arise in the days of film. We take a look at this phenomenon. Read more ...
PROSGood contrast and colour, Good AF speed that is quiet in use, Nice focal range at acceptable 3:1 ratio, Holds its value well
CONSAwkward manual focus at longer focal lengths, Known problem with bearings giving up the ghost, Wear in the bearings may well cause deterioration in performance, May drag dust into the sensor

EF 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Originally posted 2007-12-11 on Optyczne.pl Launched in 1998, the Canon 100-400 mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM has been so far one of more interesting offers on the market. Heavy, but still a great lens!
I compared this lens to the 70-300 mm f4.5/5.6 DO IS USM, using an EOS 5D MkII. At 300 mm and max. aperture, I can't tell the difference, although the 70-300 is obviously more portable. So I tested the 100-400 at 400 mm and maximum aperture, photographing a newspaper at 7.5 metres. Read more ...

It sure is heavy...
This a great lens. I pondered many months as to what lens was the best way forward for me and finally took the plunge with a very reasonable price of £1199. This lens has not been removed from my 500D since purchase and despite being very heavy I find the weight to be an advantage in holding steady... Read more ...

PROSExcellent image quality and versatile zoom range for wildlife
CONSQuite a heavy lens, and f5.6 at the long end means high ISO is necessary for handholding at times
